Graphic Novel Review: Saga Vol. 4 by Brian K. Vaughan and Fiona Staples

Rating: 5/5⭐️

Opening Line: “One last push!”

Synopsis: When two soldiers from opposite sides of a never-ending galactic war fall in love, they risk everything to bring a fragile new life into a dangerous old universe.

Review: This series keeps getting better!

I feel like this volume dealt with really meaningful topics while keeping the humor I’m used to. As soon as Hazel tells us early on what is going to happen, I was shocked. I didn’t expect it to turn out this way but it turns out that things are not how they seem.

I really didn’t like a lot of the characters actions in this book. I feel like both Alana and Marko were really selfish and that woman from the Open Circuit was probably my least favorite character in this series so far (you know, the green one…what’s her name?…Yuma!!). I did like some of the characters from the circuit even if we didn’t get to know them very well. There’s a huge scene in this book related to the Robot Kingdom that kinda blew my mind ( I feel so bad for Prince Robot IV now) and it leads to our characters being separated. I really like that volume 5 will bring two people to become allies in the most unexpected circumstances.

Also can we talk about how big Hazel and Sophie both got? Like how long has it been in the transition between vol 3 and this one? I’m so happy to see them develop!

The art was extra good in this volume, at least I think so. I really enjoyed the use of colors. Also can we talk about the opening shot in this novel? That’s one for the ages.

I’m not gonna be able to get my hands on the next volume soon but I’m really looking forward to it!

Graphic Novel Review: Saga Vol. 3 by Brian K. Vaughan and Fiona Staples

Rating: 5/5⭐️

IMG_7065.JPG

Opening Line: “I’m positive, they were a fuckin’ couple.”

Synopsis: When two soldiers from opposite sides of a never-ending galactic war fall in love, they risk everything to bring a fragile new life into a dangerous old universe.

Synopsis: Okay now we’re talking. I knew that this story would recover from how the last book didn’t have that much plot. This one was really action packed, I feel like we finally got to the part of the story I expected to be in on the last volume. I really loved how the plot developed and the fact that Heist finally, truly, came into play. I loved the humor on this and the relationships that begin to develop. I also love Gwendolyn. She’s such a badass, even if she’s out to kill the main characters I really like her and her relationship with The Will and slave girl.

Also can we talk about Prince Robot IV’s sex obsession? It gets worse in every book (it’s kinda funny when I’m reading about a war and then randomly there he is. Orgies). I didn’t really like this character in the beginning. I saw him more as a villain but after this volume I’m seriously starting to like him.

I didn’t expect the direction this volume is going in with the acting thing but I can’t wait to see where the next volume takes us.

Series to finish in 2018

So I use to be really good at marathoning series until a couple years ago I started getting tired of fantasy. Lately I’ve been in a fantasy mood so I’m hoping to finish some series this year!

1. Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas

I started reading this series September 2016 and last year I read up until “Heir of Fire” (including the novella collection, “The Assassin’s Blade”) until I became quite saturated of reading such big books following the same characters so I decided to take a rest and pick it up in the summer before the last book was supposed to come out. The last book got pushed back so my reading of these books did too. I really want to binge read “Queen of Shadows” and “Empire of Storms” and if I’m in the mood, “Tower of Dawn” (otherwise I’ll just read it in August or something.

2. The Illuminae Files by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff

This is a different case. I have not finished this series cause the last book has not come out yet. I just recently reread “Illuminae” and read “Gemina” and I cannot tell you how excited I am about the last book, “Obsidio”. I feel like Gemina left us a bit hanging and I just NEED to get my hands on the next book.

3. The Mortal Instruments by Cassandra Clare

So yeah…I’ve only read the first three books in this series and I stopped because I’m reading Clare’s books in publication order and I have not yet picked up “Clockwork Angel”. I really want to finish this series this year so that I can read “The Dark Artifices” after.

4. The Infernal Devices by Cassandra Clare

If I want to finish TMI and I’m reading in publication order, it comes as no surprise that I want to read TID this year since the last book in this trilogy came out before COHF.

5. The Raven Cycle by Maggie Stiefvater

I read the first book January last year and absolutely loved it. I don’t know why I didn’t pick up the second book right away but I really want to read it this year. I need to get the last book first though.

6. The House of Night by P.C. and Kirstin Cass

Oh me and this series have known each other since I was 12. I really liked this series back then but I have yet to read the last two books in this series. They’re pretty small so I’m confident I can finish it this year.

7. The Vampire Diaries by L.J. Smith

This will be hard cause this is my least favorite series of all time. I only have one book left so I guess I’ll read it. The third book wasn’t as bad as the second one so hopefully it won’t be so bad.

8. The Selection by Kiera Cass

I binge read the first three books in this series last year but I wanted to wait until “The Crown” was published in portuguese so that I could read Eadlyn’s arc as a whole.

This kinda feels like a lot of series but a lot of these series are one or two books so I’m kinda confident about this.

Graphic Novel Review: Saga Vol. 2 Brian K. Vaughan and Fiona Staples

Rating: 4.5/5 ⭐️

IMG_7066.JPG

Opening line: “I should rewind for a second.”

Synopsis: When two soldiers from opposite sides of a never-ending galactic war fall in love, they risk everything to bring a fragile new life into a dangerous old universe.

Review: After the twist of the last volume, I have to say I expected more from this volume. I feel like not that much happened, it felt shorter. I feel like we were stuck in the same problem throughout the whole volume, while the previous volume offered so much in a similar amount of pages. Nonetheless, I still really liked this volume, the artwork was fantastic, the characters are still lovable and I really enjoyed the new characters we got to meet. Even if this volume ended up having less in it than the last one, I’m still loving this series and can’t wait to read on.

Graphic Novel Review: The Wicked + The Divine Vol.1: The Faust Act by Kieron Gillen, Jamie McKelvie and Matt Wilson

Rating: 4.5/5 ⭐️

Opening line: “And once again, we return to this.”

Synopsis: Every ninety years, twelve gods incarnate as humans. They are loved. They are hated. In two years, they are dead. The team behind critical tongue-attractors like Young Avengers and PHONOGRAM reunite to create a world where gods are the ultimate pop stars and pop stars are the ultimate gods. But remember: just because you’re immortal, doesn’t mean you’re going to live forever.

Review: This one started out confusing. From that first flashback to the 1920s to the concert our main character Laura attends, I just had no idea what was going on. I only got the hang of things when Lucifer showed her powers. That’s when I really understood the walls of this world. I didn’t think people in this world knew there were gods like this. During the court hearings I really got the hang of it and loved the rest.

I thought the illustrations were beautiful. I loved how the color was used in each character and the general aesthetics of each one were so cool. I really liked their take of all these gods from different mythologies. I loved Lucifer, by the way. I’m really sad about her. The ending completely blew my mind. I really didn’t think that this was the direction it would go but I’m glad I gave this a shot even after all the bad reviews I read.

Graphic Novel Review: Sex Criminals Vol. 1 by Matt Fraction and Chip Zdarsky

Rating: 5/5 ⭐️

< Opening Line: “Um. Hello? We – Are you in there?”

Synopsis: Suzie’s just a regular gal with an irregular gift: when she has sex, she stops time. One day she meets Jon and it turns out he has the same ability. And sooner or later they get around to using their gifts to do what we’d ALL do: rob a couple banks. A bawdy and brazen sex comedy for comics begins here!

Review: When I first read this book I didn’t see many good reviews for it but I thought the premise was interesting so when I found it in my university city’s comic store I bought it immediately (and for like more than half the price).

From the beginning I didn’t know what to expect (and I didn’t expect what ended up happening) but I really enjoyed the story telling and the characters. I thought it was really cool how the colors change when the characters are in the void (or cumworld if you must) and I really enjoy the color scheme overall. The characters themselves, Suzie and Johnathan were really fun to hear about. I loved seeing their young selves find these powers and all their shenanigans together.

I didn’t enjoy the police part (maybe because I was so immersed in their relationship) because I didn’t expect there to be more people like them (foolish, I know) but I’m looking forward to seeing how this world broadens.

Graphic Novel Review: Saga Vol. 1 by Brian K. Vaughan and Fiona Staples

Rating: 5/5 ⭐️

Opening Line: “This is how an idea becomes real.”

Synopsis: When two soldiers from opposite sides of a never-ending galactic war fall in love, they risk everything to bring a fragile new life into a dangerous old universe.

Review: This graphic novel series has tones of hype and for a while I thought it wasn’t possible that it would live up to it, especially because I was not really into graphic novels then. I lost interest and gained interest a bunch of times but never really did anything about it.

Then I got into university and with that I found a cool comic store. I started being interested in comics and funko pops and graphic novels. So then began my search for volume 1 of this saga. I found it a week ago (after like a year) and I read it and I absolutely loved it.

How surprising? Me? Liking a hyped book?

Wow

Ground breaking

Anyway. I loved this book from the start. I thought it was very visually pleasing. The colors used were really nicely contrasted and the illustrations were absolutely beautiful.

I love how Hazel narrates this and how witty and dramatic her narration is. I love Alana and Marko, they are absolutely hilarious and they’re relationship is so beautiful. I love the set up too. This intergalactic war happening in the background is something I really look forward to seeing develop in the next volumes. I thought the politics in this were also really interesting. Prince Robot IV is hilariously uninterested in catching his fugitives. When we meet The Will I immediately knew he wasn’t a villain. I see him more as an anti-hero right now. I don’t know how much that will change in the next volumes. I like him, even if he is a horrible person. Speaking of The Will, can we talk about The Stalk? Cause I was not expecting a spider lady. How did they even have sex? How was their relationship? Do I need these questions to be answered?

Some mild spoilers down here

Another thing I was surprised by was Izabel. I wasn’t expecting the inclusion of ghosts in this story but I found it really funny that everyone that roams those woods thinks that really scary things happen in them but it’s just a bunch of kids with illusions for powers. I can’t believe Alana let her mingle with Hazel’s soul. I understand why she did it but she didn’t even ask that many questions about it, about the process. She ended up being really fun and I like how Hazel considers her a baby-sitter.

Overall I loved this and I can’t wait to get my hands on the Vol. 2 because fuck that cliffhanger.

Book Review: Nick & Norah’s Infinite Playlist by David Levithan and Rachel Cohn

Rating: 3.5/5 ⭐️

Opening Line: “The day begins in the middle of the night.”

Synopsis: A sexy, funny roller coaster of a story about one date over one very long night in New York. Nick and Norah are both suffering from broken hearts. So when Nick sees the girl who dumped him walk in with a new guy he asks the strange girl next to him to be his girlfriend for the next five minutes. Norah would do anything to avoid conversation with the not-friend girl who dumped Nick, and get over the Evil Ex whom Norah never quite broke up with. And so she agrees. What follows is an epic first date between two people who are just trying to figure out who they want to be – and where the next great band is playing.

Review: I decided to read this because I needed a fluffy read. What I got was a confusing fluffy read. I think a lot of it is my fault because I just somehow skipped a chapter and got everything mixed up and had to go back and read it numerous times, but at the end of the day it wasn’t really what I was looking for, but still enjoyable.

The characters weren’t what I expected, but not in a bad way. I expected some misfit characters, kinda “Eleanor & Park” style, but instead I got two badass punks who are pretty extroverted, in my opinion. It was fun to see how their friendships and their relationships work and how music plays into their lives.

I liked the “one night” format but I also feel like it was too short and like I didn’t get to know the characters and their lives outside that night well. I also feel like Norah was really confused about how she felt about Nick cause one minute she’s grinding on him, the next she’s running away and I found it even more confusing. I feel like Nick was easier to understand and read and like I got to know him better, maybe because people didn’t bring up random things about him that you never get to learn about. For example, when everyone, including Norah herself, keeps bringing up Norah’s dad and how much of a big deal it was I expected something to come out from that but at the end of the day Nick didn’t even know who he is so it was kinda underwhelming.

I really like how they met. It was fun to see from both their points of views when they were in that club. I was surprised to see how the side characters developed, especially Tris, who starts out as the typical fake, cheating, ex-girlfriend, and ended up being actually cool at the end.

I don’t have much else to say about this book. It’s a short read and I enjoyed it, I just wanted more than what I got from it.

Book Review: Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard

Rating: 4/5 ⭐️

Opening Line: ” I hate first Friday.”

Synopsis: This is a world divided by blood – red or silver. The silver elite in possession of god-like superpowers. And to Mare Barrow, a seventeen-year-old Red girl from the poverty-stricken Stilts, it seems like nothing will ever change. That is, until she finds herself working in the Silver Palace. Here, surrounded by the people she hates the most, Mare discovers that, despite her red blood, she possesses a deadly power of her own. One that threatens to destroy the balance of power. Fearful of Mare’s potential, the Silvers hide her in plain view, declaring her a long-lost Silver princess, now engaged to a Silver prince. Despite knowing that one misstep would mean her death, Mare works silently to help the Red Guard, a militant resistance group, and bring down the Silver regime. Mare has entered a dangerous dance – Reds against Silvers, prince against prince, and Mare against her own heart . . .

Review: When this book came out I had no intention of reading it. It looked like a mash up of all the books I had read or wanted to read. My best friend was getting into reading when this came out so I encouraged her to pick it up since I’d heard good reviews. It quickly became one of her favorite books and so for about 1 year and a half she tried to get me to read it.

So I read it and although I found a lot of tropes that annoyed me like heck in the beginning, I can see the potential this story has to become something much bigger than a mash up of all the YA dystopian tropes. I really enjoy the world, even if it was a bit confusing at times because I really don’t see how a river can be as big and straight forward as they make it out to be, or even how there would be a factory town next to the royal city but whatever. The magic system is also pretty interesting, but also convenient to the plot. In the beginning they tell you a lot of the Silver’s powers and then the author just keeps adding more as they become of use.

This is a spoiler warning
Mare is a complete YA typical heroin but I feel like she has definitive flaws that will lead to some character growth. For example, she’s extremely naive about the world she’s thrust into, which makes sense for the background she has. Cal, our ~main love interest~ (I guess?) is the most annoying character I’ve had to read since Aspen from “The Selection”. I understand that his view points are a product of the way he was raised but damn was he annoying. I do appreciate that he didn’t give up on them for ~love~ though. Then we have Maven, our other love interest (I guess?), and also, our main villain?????? how could this be??? So I knew since the reviews from this book started dropping back in 2015 that Maven was the bad guy and let me tell you, the foreshadowing is so so bad in this book. It is absolutely impossible that people didn’t catch on. She’s always saying “Anyone can betray anyone.”  or that “Maven is not like his mother”. I still like Maven way more than Cal though. He has so much potential as a love interest. Imagine if the series actually ended with a good redemption arc + the main character ending up with the main villain. I’ve never read anything like that before. So I guess you could say I ship it? I’m not sure that’s the right word though as I didn’t really feel any sparks between Mare and Cal or Mare and Maven (this applies more to the first than the latter but still). I just felt like Cal and Mare had no chemistry and nothing in common. All they had was the dance lessons, and even then I didn’t feel much. Maven is kind of similar but I enjoy their dynamic.

Can we talk about that scene at the end when Maven visits Cal and Mare in their cells? It gave me serious mind control vibes. Maven’s behavior and words didn’t make sense together at all. I bet his mother is doing a lot of work on his brain.

Also let’s talk about Maven’s mother, Queen Elara. She couldn’t just kill Cal and wait for the king to die could she? Oh well. She’s a twisted thing with very typical villain plans. She’s a dull version of Levana from “The Lunar Chronicles”, who is, by the way, one of my favorite villains of all time.

End of Spoilers

I really want to continue on with the series, especially cause I hear the next two books are way better and get away from all the tropes in the start.
